Tis The Season for a Heart Attack

Heart attacks are the last thing on many Christmas lists... It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but Advent Consumer Healthcare, LLC wants to prepare people for the uptick in coronaries that comes with the holidays.

Research shows that heart attack deaths begin to increase around Thanksgiving, continue to rise through Christmas, peak on New Year's Day, and then drop off. In addition to known risk factors such as high cholesterol, hypertension, and smoking, experts point to overindulgence and stress as major contributors to this less than merry phenomenon.

With the increase of heart attacks over the holidays, Thomas B. Graboys, M.D., President Emeritus of the Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation warns that it is critically important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. One cannot delay for a second when a heart attack strikes; patients should immediately call 911 and chew an aspirin, as directed by a doctor, to help reduce damage to the heart. Being prepared can help save a life; studies show that the use of aspirin at the onset of a heart attack could save as many as 10,000 lives each year.
