1 of 50 Newfound Alien Planets, Could Potentially Support Life
More than 50 new alien planets — including one so-called super-Earth that could potentially support life — have been discovered by an exoplanet-hunting telescope from the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
The newfound haul of alien planets includes 16 super-Earths, which are potentially rocky worlds that are more massive than our planet. One in particular - called HD 85512 b - has captured astronomers' attention because it orbits at the edge of its star's habitable zone, suggesting conditions could be ripe to support life.
The exoplanet findings came from observations from the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher instrument, or HARPS. The HARPS spectrograph is part of ESO's 11.8-foot (3.6-meter) telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. [Illustration and video of alien planet HD 85512 b] (Continue reading this story).
Everyone is talking about this incredible new discovery that could potentially give us a Super Earth to one day populate and systematically destroy. Considering the fantastic job that we have done with the planet Earth we have already I can see why the Universe would trust us with yet another of its wondrous creations! Can you you feel the sarcasm? Maybe. if we are lucky, the New World Order will shoot Obama out there to rule this Super Earth instead of trying to make him King of the World here at home! Okay, wishful thinking. Sigh.
We have talked about the theory of living on other planets before here on DJ6ual: An Irish Girl's Blog. While the concept always looks cool in the cartoons and Disney feel-good movies, the actual execution of inhabiting a so called Super Earth does not seem pleasant. Think about the travel alone, you think the TSA Rape Screenings are bad, you haven't seen nothing yet!
Aside from travel, how is homesteading going to work? I doubt you will just be able to wonder on to the new Super Earth planet and plant your flag. Will Halliburton, or a different corrupt organization, get a Government contract to build homes that only the rich will be able to afford? Or maybe they will fill the Super Earth with small compact apartments so they can ship all the poor and homeless up there! Would there be Food Banks? Food Stamps? Welfare?
I understand that all of these issues are far away. We are not even sure that this supposed Super Earth is inhabitable. The point I am trying to make is that the discovery of a Super Earth is far from the answer to all of of our problems. It is more like the beginning of them.
