Significance of 10 10 10

October 10, 2010

Today is triple-ten day — the 10th day of the 10th month of 2010. The significance of being alive and walking through this once-in-century timestamp will depend on a variety of factors.

If you live in Toronto or Sydney, Australia, and you want to get married, there's no time like the present — city halls in both cities are relocating to larger digs or staying open extra hours to accommodate hundreds of people who have booked time on what they consider to be an auspiciously lucky date.

If you're of the scientific persuasion, you know you don't need a weatherman to know which way this New Age-y wind is blowing: the same place the winds that accompanied the Harmonic Convergence blew, i.e., nowhere.

If you're of the New Age-y persuasion, you know just as certainly as the scientifically-minded that there's more to life on planet earth — or the solar system for that matter — than meets the eye.

Lisa Stewart, owner of The Awareness Shop in New Paltz, is more than comfortable making that claim. And, as someone familiar with every sort of esoteric belief system, she's also comfortable explaining some of the excitement among those believers.

What we're headed for very shortly — in 2012 — is not a mere planetary alignment but a galactic one predicted by Mayan priests millennia ago.

"What 10-10-10 is about is an energy shift leading up to 2012," Stewart said Friday.

On that basis, she said, a lot of believers in various esoteric practices will be praying or meditating for peace today.

Meanwhile, the day will also bring something called the 10-10-10 Global Work Party, which bills itself as "the single largest day of carbon-cutting action in the planet's history."

More than 7,000 events worldwide are being planned to get the word out about the threat of global warming, under the aegis of the environmental group 350.org.

Apparently, scheduling the events on 10-10-10 had no esoteric, spiritual or even scientific significance, being instead a catchy visual for advancing the effort.

The Climate Action Coalition of New Paltz got a jump on the rest of the world work party groups by holding an energy fair last weekend; you don't have to be a traffic cop to know the combination of Columbus Day and leaf-peeping traffic would not only increase the local carbon output but also make an energy fair less accessible.

Group spokeswoman Ann Guenther sounded an ecumenical note when she said she hoped that "all the mystical and spiritual people take time to reflect on the fate of this planet and what we can do to help its survival."
