Power Companies Prepare as Solar Storms Set to Hit Earth

Solar FlaresPower Companies Prepare as Solar Storms Set to Hit Earth

Three large explosions from the Sun over the past few days have prompted U.S. government scientists to caution users of satellite, telecommunications and electric equipment to prepare for possible disruptions over the next few days.

"The magnetic storm that is soon to develop probably will be in the moderate to strong level," said Joseph Kunches, a space weather scientist at the Space Weather Prediction Center, a division of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Solar FlaresHe said solar storms this week could affect communications and global positioning system (GPS) satellites and might even produce an aurora visible as far south as Minnesota and Wisconsin.

An aurora, called aurora borealis or the northern lights in northern latitudes, is a natural light display in the sky in the Arctic and Antarctic regions caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere.

Major disruptions from solar activity are rare but have had serious impacts in the past. (continue reading story).

The world has become so dependent on our satellite, telecommunications and electric equipment that if there is a disruption it is very possible the world could erupt into chaos. It is important to have the basics, if not a full scale emergency plan, in place.

Buy a gun! Handguns might seem cool, but in this situation a good old rifle is your best bet. They make a big bang and are easy to use. No one will want to mess with you if they know you are armed and with a big rifle it will be hard for people not to know.

Store some food! At the minimum 72 hours of food and water. Also fill old jugs with water for flushing your toilet and hygine so you don't have to waste your drinking water.

Get a Map! You never know if you will need to travel, and you will not be able to rely on your GPS to lead you to Grandma's House when a tree is down on the freeway.

Fill a Gas Can! Pumps will not work in an outage so if you have to go a long distance this might be the only way you will be able to make it.
